The back pre-printed explanation reads "Statue of Governor Winthrop.  The bronze statue of John Winthrop, Governor of Connecticut, 1657, 1659-1676 stands on the Old Town Square, now called Bulkeley Square.  The corner stone was laid with Masonic ceremonies May 6th,1896, the 250th anniversary of the founding of New London, but not until May 6th, 1905 was the statue dedicated.  The Charter of Connecticut was procured by Gov. Winthrop from King Charles II on April 23rd, 1662, and the statue was given to commemorate his services; $10,000 were appropriated for the purpose."
