This large, unusual and hand carved wood horse head brooch or pin has a painted eye and leather or leatherette accents. It is securely mounted and screwed into a larger piece of wood carved like a riding crop or polo stick with criss-cross details. The lacing goes through holes and wraps around the border. I'm not sure what type of wood this is carved from, it could be Redwood or Burl Wood, it does have a lovely grain to it. The background behind the horse's head appears to be leather or a leather-like material, there is slight wear along the edges of the leather. It has the old style C Clasp.

This piece of artwork measures almost 4 inches long, 1 1/2 inches tall and 1 inch deep. Although it is large it rests nicely and is lightweight. It is in very good vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged pictures. There are no chips or cracks, but a little of the white around the eye at the top has rubbed off (it is barely noticeable and easily touched up). There originally was a rein on the outside of the mouth that reached across the neck because there is a piece of the leather still attached (see picture) near the mane and it should have reached back to the mouth. Even with that missing this is still an attractive carving.

This is most likely circa 1930s or 1940s, in fact, there is a bracelet that could be it's match on page 148 of Warman's Jewelry Identification and Price Guide. If is from the Diane White Collection and was priced at $200.

This would make a wonderful gift for your favorite riding instructor, Polo Player, an Equestrian Show Rider, or anyone who loves horses. It would look great on the lapel of a jacket or on a riding hat as an accent piece.
