This is a stunning brooch that features four horses being driven by two passengers on the chariot. The horses, chariot and drivers are done in a bright gold. The background is a blue sky and green grass. I have seen this same image used for a silver coin, it based on a marble relief on the base of the Athens Acropolis depicting racers in an Apobates race. This race was a competition of two-man chariots from the Panathenaic Games, in which an armed warrior would leap off a moving chariot and run alongside it and then jump back on. I have included a picture of the relief in one of the photos so you can see the original design. Chariots and Charioteers are a popular subject for Greek Art. The brooch measures approximately 1 ¾ inches wide and 1 inch tall. The brooch is unsigned.

The original display box is a creamy beige plastic or celluloid with a Greek Key design that frames the name of the store. It looks white in the photos, but it is more of beige. The box measures approximately 2 inches square and 1 inch deep. Some of the gold has rubbed off the case, but the case is still in nice shape. The front of the box reads “Jewellery George the Greek” It also has the address “91 A Pandrossou Str. Athens and the telephone number.

This brooch is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. I don’t believe it was ever worn as it was most likely purchased as a souvenir. The back is a gold tone metal with a rollover clasp. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.

This would be perfect for anyone who collects Greek jewelry or studies Grecian history.
