This is a lovely hand crafted pewter brooch that has a triple spiral design called a Triscele or Triskele. It is signed on the back AEW © 1997. It is a silver tone pewter metal with a Heathergems cabochon set in the middle of the brooch in shades of red, green and yellow. It measures approximately 2 inches in diameter. Heathergems are made from the stems of heather gathered on the moors and hills of the Scottish Highlands. Each piece is hand made by Scottish craft workers. The stems are processed by putting cross sections of the heather stems together and dying those different colors, mixing and pressure pressing and then cutting and polishing to form colorful mosaics and unusual patterns in wide color variations.

The symbol is often found in the Celtic art of Ireland and Scotland. It is thought to represent the three realms of Celtic lore: the past, the present and the future. It is also known to represent the three Celtic worlds, the Otherworld; the Mortal World and the Celestial World. The triskelion if found in many early cultures and is also a traditional symbol of Sicily, where it is called Trinacria, and of the Isle of Man. It was also found on warriors’ shields on Greek pottery. The name of the symbol is derived from the Greek word “Triskeles” meaning “three legs”.

This brooch is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. The roll over clasp closure works fine and is secure. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.

This would be perfect for anyone who loves the Celtic themed jewelry and Kilt pins. Because of how the Heathergems are made, each one is uniquely different, so this a one of a kind piece of wearable art. It would be a great accent for a man or a woman. pinned to a Tartan, a jacket lapel, a shawl, scarf or a sweater.
