Space and time, the stars and planets, all his handiwork. We think this picture is really cool. The sun and the planets have an elegant, almost science-fictional look, even though this was done in 1865. The swirls and ribbons look a lot like the whorls on Jupiter, which their telescopes had not yet been able to reach or reveal. A perfect picture for anyone who wants a beautiful declaration of the glory of God in the worlds he has made.The mural is from St. Michael and All the Angels Church of East Yorkshire. The church was originally built about 1132 A.D., but by the 19th Century it was in need of considerable repairs and refurnishing. The firm of Clayton and Bell, primarily known for their stained glass, were hired to do the murals. We don't know if this particular style had a name, but it is visibly part of that river of Western art that flows from Romanticism through Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau to 60s art and Peter Max.
