I changed the price of an item from $89.95 to $49.95 (a loss leader), but even though the price has visibly changed, it still falls between $89.95 and $89.99 items in a low price sort list.
BTW, I notice that the item cost plus shipping cost does not equal item cost plus free shipping. i.e. Book $5 with $10 shipping ($15 total) shows first in a low price list against Book $15 with free shipping ($15 total).

Somebody has to go first when the total cost is the same. If this is the case, why couldn’t the $5 book with $10 shipping show first? After all, the $5 book (with $10 shipping to be $15 total) still has the actual ITEM cheaper than the $15 book with free shipping. Bonanza either coded it to be that way, or perhaps there is a secondary sort that uses the date the item was posted.
Another thing to consider… Suppose both of the sellers in your $5/$10 shipping or $15/free shipping book example have a second item listed that you wanted to purchase under the same conditions… If I buy from the $5 + $10 seller, I might get a break on combined shipping and pay less than $30 total. If I buy from the seller who offers the book for $15 with free shipping, I’m probably going to be charged $30 total.
That might be a justification that the programmers used to place the $5/$10 item at the top of the list in the lowest price sort.

You should also clear your cache before searching an item after repricing. Often laptops and desktops will go to the cached info by default. Not sure that has anything to do with this issue but it came to mind when reading your post.

not really sure what you are asking..
If an item is listed with free shipping then there is no shipping costs attached…
So you will have to list the book for $15.00 (and no shipping costs) or list it as $5.00 + $10.00 in shipping. The system will not automatically put in that $10 shipping for you it you select the Free shipping option.
As to the other…the search system updates in 24-72 hours though you items can still searchable within 30 min of listing on site and within 24 at google
hope this answered you questions…
