Was it a small or flat item? They might have shipped it as a USPS first class flat envelope, in which case there isn’t a tracking number.

Many good points and reasons in the answers everybody provides but note that the original poster does not provide any additional info on what and when they ordered item and probably will not return to reply if or not they received said item. Buyers need to realize that there are things beyond the sellers control when shipping items and that sellers do have an outside life besides waiting (sometimes months) for a sale here.
I personally check once a day but online shopping is not an instant gratification have it in your hands NOW sort of thing like at a store. Please have a little patience and would be nice to have info about exactly how long you had been waiting for item.
While we can offer insight on what may have happened, only the SELLER can really answer your concerns.

A seller would be insane not to have a tracking #, 99% of all shipping services include the tracking # for free so in most cases there is always a tracking # available. However, First Class flat letters are the only one I know of where there is no tracking offered. Give it 1 work week, if nothing, file a claim thru Paypal (or whomever you paid with). This is how I handle all of my purchases as these days if a seller cannot ship within 24 hours of purchase I tend to not purchase thru them again.

Tracking does cost extra, when it’s basically the same as First Class time-wise. Like Kazoo said, USPS first class flat envelopes under 13 oz. can be mailed w/o tracking and will be just as safe as any letter, bill, card, etc, you mail with a stamp.
Some sellers keep their prices down by saving the tracking fee thereby helping the buyer save on their item. No one is insane; on the contrary, they may be kind in trying to help you save.
The tracking more than doubles my shipping fee, but I do it because there are so many thieving buyers who learned so many tricks from eBay to get their items free, and no tracking is one way to hand a thief a freebie.

This is a sore spot for me, Buyers expectations for a 24 hour shipping is not always realistic, Sellers do have a life other then internet selling. That being said a sellers normal shipping policies need to be stated. if a buyer cannot live with stated normal shipping [Which is normally 24-48 hours for me]and [I do not shipping on my Saturday Sabbath] they do need to look else where.
As for Tracking Number the PO has done quit a sell job their. It seems everybody now expects expensive tracking, but does not want to pay for it. I am now using 1st class flat without tracking as much as I can so as to make mailing as reasonable as possible for the buyer. There is NO free shipping. If the buyer desires tracking I will edit the listing for them so tracking can be had, just let me know before purchase.
