Whitman Folders -
Liberty Head Nickel, 1883-1912 Inclusive
Nickels of this design , often called "V nickels," were introduced in 1883. The first coins did not have the word CENTS on the back and some were gold plated and fraudulently passed as $5 gold pieces. Later that year the U.S Mint added the word CENTS in its present location.
All Liberty Head nickels were struck at the Philadelphia Mint except for part of the coinage of 1912, when some coins were struck in Denver and San Francisco. The mintmarks D and S appear on the reverse, under the bullet in front of the word CENTS.
Five 1913 Liberty Head nickels were originally owned by Colonel E.H.R. Green (son of the famous Hetty Green, the "Witch of Wall Street"). These have since been dispersed and are now held in various public and private collections. These were not a regular issue and were never placed in circulation.
Beneath each hole in this folder is the mintage quantity for that year and mint.
Liberty Head Nickel, 1883-1912 Inclusive, 33 openings. Whitman brand, folder opens flat for all-at-once viewing and includes data pertaining to the coins it holds.
The holes in this folder have a special LOCK-IN feature. But first, a word of caution: always hold a coin by the edge and never touch its obverse or reverse. We recommend you wear gloves when pressing your coins into place. Now that you are ready, simply place the coin with one edge tipped into the hole, and then press the high edge downward and toward the lowered edge (slantwise). Feel the snap? It's locked in!
