This antique Ming table was known as Scholar Daybed and was a standard piece of furniture in a scholar's study during the Ming-Qing dynasty. A scholar might lie down and rest on his daybed, sit with a companion on it, or merely use it as a surface on which to place books or other favored objects. A daybed is more frequently seen and used as a long large table. It is handcrafted in elegant Ming style with simple and straight lines. The intricate "relief" carvings of traditional Chinese auspicious design decorate both sides of the table. The table is handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and the tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China.
