Descripción del Artículo
Interesting vintage pitcher trophy won in 1951 by one Dr. L. Schwartz who also finished second in a Harlem tournament in 1926 and won the Montreal title in 1927, both in singles. We sold the Harlem trophy recently but it was not inscribed so we did not at the time know who had won it. A return to the source auction house turned up other trophies of his in the back and they just get so much stuff they didn't know they even had them. This trophy is for an event at the Indian Springs Country Club in Marlton, New Jersey. It was originally listed with partial identification as it only indicates "I.S." but fiurther items turned up from the same estate revealed the location.
From bottom of legs to top of handle about nine inches tall. Maker hallmark consists of a Crusader's shield held at right by a Lion Rampant and I don't know what it is on the left. Marked as "VER (Vermeil) ON COPPER". Vermeil is gold plated over a typically silvery base and I think what they did was plate a copper base with silver and then gold plate it. This is commonly done with jewelry and decorative ware, it looks really nice but the gold wash wears off easily and some has worn off. Very likely made in England in fact I would bet on it. Nice shape no damage and has an attractive gold tone to it, well it should. (Appears that the inside was only silver plated, which makes sense given the item which was not likely imagined as a trophy at the factory it was made at.)
Inscribed "I.S. Senior Champion, Net, Dr. L. Schwartz, 1951". The "net" notation suggests to me this was won in doubles. From the post-war era when sports were really picking up and Jack Kramer had developed "The Big Game" which changed tennis. Sure to look great in any tennis or sports collection and having a unique appearance, it will attract attention and you will be happy to have it.
Shipping: Too big for any of the flat rate boxes so the price is given by the shipping calculator based on the boxed weight of four pounds and your distance from Virginia Beach
