Designed by renowned architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the bridge was constructed between 1821 and 1824, replacing an earlier wooden structure. It served as a prominent crossing connecting the Unter den Linden boulevard to Museum Island and the City Palace. The bridge is adorned with eight neoclassical marble statues depicting heroic themes, crafted between 1845 and 1857. During the era of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the bridge was renamed Marx-Engels-Brücke in honor of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Following German reunification, the original name, Schlossbrücke, was restored in 1991.
