ROMAN REPUBLIC ~ IMPERATORIAL PERIOD
ANCIENT COINAGE
Rare Issues of Imperatorial Rome
LICINIUS NERVA
Moneyer
47 BC
From the Time of JULIUS CAESAR
49 BC Caesar crosses the Rubicon. Civil war between Caesar and Pompey begins. 49 BC Julius Caesar besieges Massilia. Julius Caesar captures Brundisium in southern Italy.
48 BC Caesar defeats Pompey (battle of Pharsalus); Pompey flees to Egypt
and is killed by courtiers of Ptolemy XIII.
43 BC: The Second Triumvirate established in the Roman Republic between Octavian (Julius Caesar's adoptive son) and Marc Antony.
Minted at Rome, 47 BC. Silver Denarius. 18mm. c. 3.5g.
Obverse: Laureate head right of Fides. Nerva / Fides ~ Translation: Nerva / Fidelity.
The
choice of Fides, the personification of good faith, loyalty and
trustworthiness, as obverse type most likely relates to the reverse, and
is particularly noteworthy for being the only instance where she
appears on Republican coinage.
Reverse: One-armed horseman galloping right, dragging warrior by the hair; A. LICINI/ III - VIR ~ Reverse translation: ?Aulus Licinius Triumvir? (Aulus Licinius triumvir, monetary). The
significance of this interesting reverse type portraying a one-armed
soldier dragging a captive by the hair presumably relates to a famous
exploit of one of the moneyer's ancestors~commemorating Aulus Licinius Nerva's victory in Macedonia over Andriscus in 147 BC. He then became praetor in 143 or 142 BC. However, the story is
unfortunately lost to us.
