ROMAN REPUBLIC ~ IMPERATORIAL PERIOD
ANCIENT COINAGE
Rare Issues of Imperatorial Rome
TITUS CARISIUS
46 BC
From the Time of JULIUS CAESAR
49 BC Caesar crosses the Rubicon. Civil war between Caesar and Pompey begins. 49 BC Julius Caesar besieges Massilia. Julius Caesar captures Brundisium in southern Italy.
48 BC Caesar defeats Pompey (battle of Pharsalus); Pompey flees to Egypt
and is killed by courtiers of Ptolemy XIII.
43 BC: The Second Triumvirate established in the Roman Republic between Octavian (Julius Caesar's adoptive son) and Marc Antony.
Minted at Rome, 46 BC. Silver Denarius. 19mm. c. 3.8g.
Obverse: Head of Roma right, wearing ornate helmet; ROMA behind.
Reverse: Scepter, cornucopia on globe, and rudder; T ? CARISI below; all within laurel wreath.
Comments: The obverse of this denarius recalls the first coins of the Republic with the helmeted head of Roma. The reverse exalts Rome's domination on land and sea and perhaps also recalls Caesar's quadruple triumph over his enemies. The scepter represents the land power of the armies, the rudder the maritime power of the fleet. The cornucopia placed on the globe symbolizes happiness and universal prosperity.
History: The mint college of 46 BC included three monyers: Manius Cordus Rufus, Titus Carisius, and Caius Considius Petus. Titus Carisius exalts Caesar's origins in his monetary iconography and participates in the celebration of Caesar's quadruple triumph that year. Vercingetorix, after participating in the Imperator's triumph, was strangled at the Mamertine. Little is known about Titus Carisius's career beyond his monetary triumvirate.
