U.S. CAVALRY, ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, R.I.A. M1903, SPURS, MATCHED SET This is a matched set of Rock Island Arsenal military cavalry spurs. Each spur is engraved with "R.I.A. 1903" on the strap arms. One spur has the number "129" engraved on the strap arm. The initials "R.I.A." represent Rock Island Arsenal, and the "1903" represents Model 1903 (M1903). The number "129" was likely added to the spur later by a unit or depot for inventory tracking. The roundels rotate freely. The M1903 spur was produced by Rock Island Arsenal from 1903 to 1911. This set of spurs is identified as an enlisted model based on the location of the R.I.A. stamp on the exterior of the spur. Additionally, the presence of small studs positioned between the strap slots distinguishes these as 1903 models; without these studs, they would be classified as 1885s. The arsenal served as a prison camp during the Civil War; produced infantry, cavalry, and artillery equipment during the Spanish-American War; produced arms, ammunition, and personal equipment during World War I; and manufactured machine guns and disintegrating belt links for machine guns during World War II.
