It is a carving created by Alan Natrall, a member of the Squamish Nation. According to Wikipedia, “the Squamish culture is the customs, arts, music, lifestyle, food, painting and sculpture, moral systems and social institutions of the Squamish indigenous people, located in the Southwestern part of British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the Coast Salish cultural group.” Wolves are thought to be spirits of deceased hunters and are considered a family oriented symbol in the West Coast Native Culture. A model of a totem pole that he created was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2001 by the J.P. Fell Pipe Band, Canadian Military Engineers. This eye-catching Wolf brooch is carved out of wood and hand painted in the traditional red and black with some bright blue accents. Alan’s name is carved into the back of the piece. It measures approximately 5 inches long and 1 inches in height. It is in great vintage condition as you can see from the many enlarged photographs.
