This rare 1887 hardcover book offers a compelling look into the life and legacy of Sappho, the celebrated Archaic Greek lyric poet of Lesbos. In this second edition, Wharton includes a biographical memoir, extensive historical references, and translations of her extant fragments. The book covers her influence, quotes from other ancient writers, and how her voice shaped literature through the centuries.
Sappho (c. 630 ? c. 570 BCE) was hailed in antiquity as one of the greatest lyric poets. Her passionate poetry was composed to be accompanied by a lyre, earning her titles like ?The Tenth Muse? and ?The Poetess.? Though much of her work survives only in fragments, pieces like the "Ode to Aphrodite" remain iconic in classical literature.
Condition:
Acceptable vintage condition for its age. The cover shows typical wear including edge fraying, rubbing, and some fading. Binding remains intact but has loosened in spots. Some foxing and toning throughout the pages. Please review all photos carefully to assess condition. A wonderful addition for collectors of classical literature or antique books.
