How to Prepare Seeds Before Planting Read the Seed Packet Look for info like planting depth, spacing, and whether the seeds need special treatment (like soaking or chilling). Sort Select Seeds Choose healthy, intact seeds. Discard any that are broken or look moldy. Soak Seeds (Optional but Helpful for Some) Especially useful for hard-coated seeds (beans, peas, squash, etc.). Soak in warm water for 4–24 hours to speed up germination. Scarify Seeds (If Needed) For very hard seeds (like morning glories or sweet peas), gently nick the seed coat with sandpaper or a nail file. This helps water get in. Pre-Germinate Seeds (Optional) Place seeds between moist paper towels, keep them warm, and check daily. Once they sprout, carefully plant them in soil. Stratify Seeds (Only If Required) Some seeds (like lavender or milkweed) need a “cold period.” Store them in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag in the fridge for a few weeks. Prepare Soil or Seed Starting Mix Use clean, moist seed-starting mix (not regular garden soil). Fill seed trays or pots and level the surface. Label Everything If you’re planting different seeds, label them clearly to avoid confusion later.
