The purpose and benefit to using plastic pellets is to maintain volume. As progress is made in the removal of rough edges to the stones, the amount of free space in the barrel increases, which leads the stones to make repeated contact with other stones during the final stages, this can cause fractures and imperfections in the final result of the polished stones. The polishing stages are dependent upon contact with the barrel and the polishing slurry.
