Justinian I. (527-565 AD). Dated RY 13 (539-540 AD). Æ Nummus, Carthage mint. (0.70g; 9.0mm). O./ IVSTI, diademed and draped bust right. R./ VOT XIII within wreath. Similar coin sold CNG e auction 405 (9 June 2017) Lot 574 for $190USD. DOC I 302; SB 278. $150
It is extremely rare to encounter any readable legend on these Carthage nummi. It appears that by this point the Byzantines had forgotten the original meaning of the vota, and simply used it as a regnal year designator. Regnal years 13, 14, and 16 are known
