The Magnolia tree, named for French botanist Pierre Magnol, is commonly called the Tulip tree because of its large, tulip-like blossoms. It is a cross between a large shrub and a small tree. The beautiful pink and white blossoms of the most common M. soulangiana, or saucer magnolia, emerge in early spring before its foliage unfolds. They make colorful harbingers of spring’s arrival, but early blooming frequently makes them victims of late-season frosts. Some magnolias, like the star magnolia, are pleasingly fragrant, but the popular soulangiana is not. Tulip trees will grow on an average about 12 to 18 inches per year, and will reach a height of 15 to 20 feet at maturity. Propagation can be achieved via seed, but most often cuttings, layering, and grafting are the preferred methods. Layering should undertaken in June and July. After a layered branch has rooted, it can be cut from the parent stock and survive on its own. Well-drained, rich, acidic soil has proven to provide the best medium for successful cultivation. Pruning may occasionally be needed if maximum height is desirable; otherwise, magnolia trees require little maintenance, and are one of the most sought-after ornamental trees. #1034
