Descripción del Artículo

96-98 Nerva Billon Tetradrachm (VF NGC) Roman Egypt Alexandria Dikaiosyne Dike 96-98 AD Roman Egypt Billon Tetradrachm Coin Issued under the rule of Nerva, the 12th Emperor of the Roman Empire (96-98 AD) Obverse features a laureate bust of the emperor, facing right, with legend in Greek Reverse depicts Dikaiosyne (Dike/Justice) holding scales and cornucopia, standing left, with "LA" in fields Nerva became Emperor at the age of sixty-five, after a lifetime of imperial service under Nero and the rulers of the Flavian dynasty. One the same day that Domitian was assassinated in a palace conspiracy involving members of the Praetorian Guard, Nerva was declared emperor by the Roman Senate. This was the first time the Senate elected a Roman Emperor. As the new ruler of the Roman Empire, he vowed to restore liberties which had been curtailed during the autocratic government of Domitian. Nerva's brief reign was marred by financial difficulties and his inability to assert his authority over the Roman army. After only fifteen months in office, Nerva died of natural causes. Although much of his life remains obscure, Nerva was considered a wise and moderate emperor by ancient historians.
