Agarwood Essential Oil (Aquilaria Malaccensis, Oud, Oodh, Aguru)
Info
Agarwood essential oil is steam-distilled from sustainably harvested aged heartwood of Aquilaria Malaccensis tree growing under controlled conditions in South Asia.
Agarwood, or the Wood of Gods, most commonly referred to as Oud, Oudth (also known as Oodh, Aloeswood, Eaglewood, Kyara, Ud, and Aguru) is a fragrant, dark and resinous wood used in incense, perfume, cosmetics, and aromatherapy for its unique fragrance.
Agarwood essential oil is procured by distilling the heartwood of the genus Aquilaria, a flowering tree with various species that grow in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam (A. crassna); the Philippines (A. filaria); and northeastern India, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Indonesia, Borneo (A. agallocha), but only those trees that have been infected by a parasitic fungus (Phialophora parasitica and others) are the source of this rare and highly prized material.
The essential oil of Agarwood is producced from the the tree resin which is formed in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees after they become infected with a type of Phialophora mold, P. parasitica. The tree defensively secretes a resin to combat the fungal infestation. Prior to becoming infected, the heartwood is mostly lacking in scent, and is relatively light and pale in coloration. However, as the infection advances, and the tree produces its fragrant resin as a final option of defense, the heartwood becomes very dense, dark, and saturated with resin. This resin is harvested and distilled into Agarwood essential oil, which most famously referred to in cosmetics under the scent names of oud, oodh or aguru. With thousands of years of known use, and valued across Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities (among other religious groups), oud is prized in Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures for its distinctive fragrance, utilized in colognes, incense, perfumes, and many other cosmetic and aromatic products.
The aromatic qualities of agarwood are influenced by the species, geographic location, its branch, trunk and root origin, length of time since infection, and methods of harvesting and processing.
