Dr.-Ing. E. h. Kurt Hain (1908-1995) was a pioneer of Applied Kinematics in Germany. He started his scientific career in his native town Leipzig. Between 1936 and 1994 he wrote 13 books, 380 scientific papers and designed 176 mechanism models. He worked in nearly all subfields of kinematics and machinery. There are notions, procedures and methods that are strongly connected with his name. Dr. Thomas Paton Goodman (1926-1964), Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University and editor for this translation, died before completing that task. Dr. Douglas P. Adams, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, M.I.T. assumed the role of editor after Goodman's death. In addition to the editors, translators included: F. R.
