RARE ~ Ancient Roman Coinage of Crispus ~ Constantine the Great ROMAN EMPIRE CRISPUS as Caesar, 317-326 AD Son of and under CONSTANTINE the Great as Augustus, 306-337 AD. Æ3 Follis (billon nummis) 18mm. c. 3.0g. EXTREMELY RARE ~ Rated R4/R5 in RIC Crispus was executed by his father Constantine for incest with his step-mother, Constantine's wife Fausta. Constantine executed his son (by his first wife/consort Minervina) Crispus on trumped-up charges of incest and boiled his own wife--scalded in the bath on the order of Constantine in 326. From the Epfig Hoard This coin comprises one of the coins found in the Epfig Hoard. Originally discovered in 2010 in the small town of Epfig, in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, these coins were part of 110 kg of Roman treasure hidden away in three large ceramic pots. For over 1600 years, these coins were buried and kept in stunning condition. This Roman Coin of Crispus has been graded in AU (About Uncirculation) condition by NGC. It is truly rarest of Ancient coins to have a pedigree stretching to the original time of coin in circulation including original find spot AND an R4/R5 Rarity ~ a truly Unicorn coin! Lugdunum (Lyons) mint, Struck c. 321 A.D. under Crispus as Caesar, and Constantine "the Great" as Emperor. Obverse: CRISPVS NOB CAES. Unabridged legend: Crispus Nobilis Caesar in Latin. Translation: The Noble Caesar Crispus , Bust of Crispus, helmeted, cuirassed, right. Reverse: Globe on inscribed altar; above, No stars (extremely rare perhaps even unique~typically three stars, rarely two-and the extremely rare referenced coins of which there are only three listed (RIC 133) all are not helmeted portraits but laureate headed/laureate cuirassed and rated R4, R5's). Letters C - R across fields. Mintmark in exergue PLG. Script: Latin Lettering: BEATA TRANQVILLITAS ~ VOT / IS / XX. Unabridged Latin legend: Beata Tranquillitas. Votis vicennalibus. Translation: Blessed peace. Vows for the twentieth anniversary of reign. NGC Graded Certified AU ~ About Uncirculated ~ Epfig Hoard Pedigree included on Holder. Ref. RIC VII 134 (rated R4) This is an unlisted variation with NO Stars on reverse (cf. RIC 133 rated R4, R5 for no stars but unhelemted obv.) and obverse legend CAES instead of CAS; an R5 Coin~Unique-Nearly Unique! Perhaps a unique mule of an RIC 134 obverse (with a variation in legend) and RIC 133 zero star reverse. RARE Rated "R4-R5" in RIC (ratings range from Common-("C") Scarce ("S") - to Rare ("R") with a numerical score 1 to 5 with R5 considered unique-nearly unique. RIC (Roman Imperial Coinage) is the general abbreviation for the set of 13 volumes of identification catalogs of Roman coins. RIC is the definitive / world standard scholarly reference. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR GUARANTEE: All illustrations are of the actual item offered. The authenticity of all pieces is fully guaranteed.
