Everyone, yes, everyone who was more than two years old, 30 years ago, has vivid memories of the day Lady Say, Diana Spencer married the Prince of Wales. She became a phenomenon, not only for those involved but for the millions who watched every detail that day. Calligraphy, willing trumpets, white horses, and the pumpkin carriage injected a surge of glamour, romance, and excitement into a summer that ushered in a NEW ERA. Diana of Wales, only 20 years old, had a born star and the world was instantly captivated. royal wedding lady di and prince charles; Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles on their wedding day,For many of us, when we were approaching our thirties, it was a turning point. During the spring in Nairobi, my boyfriend James Macmanus and I had gotten engaged, and by the time I got back to London, summer weddings had become a national obsession. Fourteen of my friends got married that season, and we planned our future lives on the back of what promised to be the most romantic wedding of all. It was our summer of love, set to a soundtrack by The Police, and we ventured into happily ever after with wild optimism. It was a summer of camouflage smocks and Bellville Sassoon suits. The glamor that would become the style of the Princess of Wales had not yet developed. She was still the quintessential Sloane rancher, a tribe that was officially named the following year, but who were both socially and fashionally successful that summer, with their bark collars and Hermes scarves. Notting Hill hadn't been invented yet: the bright young men hailed from Chelsea and dressed in billowing pirate-style robes from World's End with brightly colored jeans from Joseph. As for wedding dresses, it was, I must report, the year of the merengue; Huge ruffled taffeta and lace confections at each neckline and sleeve. The royal wedding dress itself, with its 25-foot train, evoked strong sentiments (critics said it was wrinkled or ill-fitting) but the general verdict was that it was exactly as it should have been: a wedding dress fit for a princess.
