The copy for sale is stated to be from the first printing of the first edition of this paperback. This is supported by the printed ONE DOLLAR EACH MSR on the rear cover. The International Geophysical Year (IGY) was an international scientific project that lasted from 1 July 1957 to 31 December 1958. It marked the end of a long period during the Cold War when scientific interchange between East and West had been seriously interrupted. Sixty-seven countries participated in IGY projects. Most publicity was given to which country would orbit the first satellite, USA or USSR. (USSR won October 1 1957 with Sputnik I.) The book consists of a cartoon spoof of the Simon Schuster colophon running through the title page, table of contents, a perspective on the IGY by Kelly in both a 6-paragraph reflection a 4 panel cartoon " A Word to the Fore", and 39 topical B W comic strip chapters. 191pp. Walter Crawford Kelly, Jr. (1913-1973) was named Cartoonist of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society in 1952. Pogo remains one of the world's most popular comic strips. A collection of comic strips by the immortal Walt Kelly featuring characters that lived in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. Often a vehicle for political commentary, Kelly made famous the revised Commodore Perry quote "We have met the enemy, and he is us." Paperback cover has blue background with colored cartoons front and back, black yellow lettering on spine. Covers are whole with minor wear at edges.
