Ancient Roman Follis Coin of Galerius
GALERIUS

Galerius Maximian
AE Follis. 9.03g. 28mm. ~ For comparison a U.S. Quarter is 24mm and 5.75g.
Carthage mint. Struck c. AD 303. Fourth Officina (?).
Obverse: GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, laureate head right.
Reverse: Carthago (Goddess of Carthage) standing facing, head left, holding fruits in both hands; SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART--Latin abbreviation: Saluis Augustoris et Caesaribus Felicitas Karthago = "Blessed Carthage, for the Salvation of the two Augusti and two Caesars".
This coin refers to the good fortune provided by Carthage to the emperors. When the Nile floods were deficient and Egypt suffered scarcity, Roman ships importing wheat steered for Carthage, from which they brought back a sufficient supply to the eternal city. ? in exergue (=4th officina); I (I=Jupiter, i.e. western half of tetrarchy) in left field.

Condition: nearly XF, a bit of remaining silvering on obverse.
