UP FOR SALE: This lithograph is Plate III (Legs) from Leonard Baskin?s Ars Anatomica (1972), published by Editions Medicina Rara. It comes from the scarce Double Suite edition, Portfolio No. 133 of only 300 produced, far rarer than the standard 2,800 single suites issued. Very few complete Double Suites remain intact, making impressions from them especially desirable to collectors. This work is a lithographic transfer from pen ink drawings, printed at The Curwen Press in London on hand-made paper created specifically for this project by E. Towgood Sons of Sawston, Cambridgeshire, and bearing the private watermark of Medicina Rara. Ars Anatomica is widely considered the first anatomical portfolio created by a major modern artist. These works reflect the best traditions of anatomical illustration ? created not for scientific accuracy, but for their beauty, power, and artistic merit. As noted in the colophon of Vesalius? Fabrica (1543): ?Some of these images seem even hundreds of years later to make a profound statement about man through the portrayal of his physicality.? Baskin?s Ars Anatomica unites his lifelong fascination with physiognomy and medical illustration. In his own words: ?The art of our time is an act of cowardice, a triumph of the trivial, a squandering of treasure? Man must rediscover man, harried and brutalized, distended and eviscerated, but noble withal, rich in intention, puissant in creative spur, and enduring in the posture of love.? ?
