This is the Lipton Tea Bags Hand-Carved, Hand Painted Wood Carving by Jarosz (#0617). This Advertisement sign measures 12 by 9 inches and has a hook on the back for easy display. The back of the carving explains “LIPTON TEA” by Thomas J. Lipton Inc. Sir Thomas J. Lipton was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1850. Although his plans were to go to America to “make his fortune, “it was only upon returning home from America to assist with his family’s provision shop that actually made it for him. He purchased his first shop on Stobcross Street in 1871 selling ham, eggs, and cheese in less than five years, he was the sole proprietor of 20 establishment in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. He was a very wealthy man before he even sold a pound of tea. In 1888, he added tea to his inventory, being the first merchant to offer tea in packets. He opened his first packaging plant in this country in 1908. He did not appear on the package until after his death in 1931. It is in very good condition, please see [ix for a complete description.
