I begin with clearing away the difficulties which arise from two misunderstood passages in the Old Testament, and prove that the Scriptures do not deny a future life to the lower animals. I then show that the lower animals share with man the attributes of Reason, Language, Memory, a sense of Moral Responsibility, Unselfishness, and Love, all of which belong to the spirit and not to the body; and that as man expects to retain these qualities in the next world, there is every reason to presume that the lower animals may share his immortality hereafter as they share his mortality at present."
