Keychain for the 1974 Inauguration of Mayor Coleman A. Young as Mayor of Detroit, 1-1/4" pewter 7/8 oz. keychain.
This inauguration of Mayor Coleman Young marked a milestone for many of Detroit's residents. For a city grappling with deep racial issues, electing its first Black mayor was seen as a sign of more representative city govenment. Young came into office hoping to bring investment, end the S.T.R.E.S.S. poligce program, better integrate city services, and turn around econnomic decline. Unfortunately, slowed manufacturing growth, continued popuplation loss, and poor personnel moves by Mayor Young hindered Detroit's rebound.
