THIS WEEK : Our cover picture represents the two young Americans, Brian Sullivan of Oakland, California and Polyna Stoska of Worcester, Mass. who will impersonate the leading roles in Peter Grimes next Saturday afternoon.
We are publishing Lilian Foerster's searching indictment of Britten's classical tragedy, The Rape of Lucretia, which was played last month for the first time in New York. Miss Foerster's criticism seems justified both by the reactions of the press and the indifference of the public, which supported the production for less than three weeks. Admirers of the work, however, maintain that it is a majestic and inspired score which would have prospered in a smaller theatre than the Ziegfeld.
In view of the interest in Peter Grimes, aroused by its second broadcast performance next Saturday, our attention is this week directed toward Great Britain. A report of current opera costs and news of recent opera and ballet productions are accordingly offered in this issue.
