They both had to give away their babies before being fed to the wild animals in their total surrender to Christ. The palm branch in the background symbolizes martyrdom.It is said that when the crowd observed the two young mothers clinging to each other in the Colosseum as the wild beasts approached, many were moved to tears of sorrow.
