Descripción del Artículo
14 Piece Trinitite Lot – 30 Grams
Locality: Trinity Site, Jornada del Muerto desert, Alamogordo, New Mexico, USA
Approximate Weight: 30.4 Grams
Weakly radioactive: Although most of the short-lived radioactive isotopes accumulated by the glass have long since decayed, one gram of trinitite can still have an activity of two or more times normal background radiation when measured with a pancake tube such as in the GQ-GMC-600+. The activity is mostly due to the presence of Cs-137 in the specimen.
Trinitite, also known as Alamogordo glass or Atomic Age glass, is a glass-like material formed during the first atomic bomb test, Trinity, on July 16, 1945. The intense heat and energy released fused sand, creating trinitite. The test detonated a plutonium bomb in New Mexico’s Jornada del Muerto desert, vaporizing the sand. The molten sand cooled and solidified, resulting in greenish glass with a translucent or semi-transparent texture. Trinitite is primarily composed of fused silica and contains traces of other minerals.
