This beautifully reconditioned retro wall clock was manufactured between 1937 and 1948 and was known as the “Garçon”—a nod to its sleek, refined design that embodied the elegance of its era. (“Garçon” means “waiter” in French.) When acquired, the red paint was deteriorated—peeling, faded, and, due to the clock’s age, identified as lead-based. The original paint was carefully removed and replaced with three coats of a rich, red oil-based finish. The glass crystal has very minor hard-to-see scratches, and the dial is bright and clean, showing no yellowing and only minimal, age-appropriate wear. Unlike many of its contemporaries that retain noisy electric motors, this example has been upgraded to a quartz battery movement—eliminating the dangling electric cord and allowing for flexible placement in any room. The original hour and minute hands were modified to fit a continuous-sweep mechanism, resulting in whisper-quiet operation with no ticking sounds. The antique’s original time-setting knob has been preserved to maintain historical authenticity, though it is no longer functional. To simplify battery changes, a ribbon has been thoughtfully installed within the movement: just tug gently and the battery lifts right out.
