Vintage NW Coast Native American Haida Pendant Slide Silver Tone Metal Pacific Northwest Indian Salmon Fish Raven Necklace Enhancer Jewelry Tribal Symbols Ethnic Artisan Crafted 3 Dimensional Alaska Canada Stylized This is a beautiful Pacific Northwest Indian Tribe pendant or slide. This was purchased on a trip through Canada and Alaska in the 1970s. This is an unusual and intricate design of a stylized fish or Salmon in a sculpted silver metal (not marked and has not been tested for metal content) with dark accents that highlight the images of the birds and the figures inside the fish's body. From what I have found doing research, the faces are the watchmen on the lookout for enemies approaching the village. The birds represent Ravens, the Tricksters, according to legend the Raven discovered mankind and was responsible for bringing light and order to the world. The Salmon represents dependability and is seen as a great provider. This is most likely Haida or Tlingit in origin. It is not signed, but is obviously a quality piece. I have not found another one like it anywhere online, it seems to be a one of a kind piece. Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. You can't wear this on a thin necklace because it will rotate down. It would work best on a flat leather cord style necklace where you put the cord through the openings and then bring the cord together with a little metal piece. It might also work on a sheer scarf as a decorative accessory with the scarf pulled through on one side and then knotted below the slide (see photo). The openings on the back are of an inch deep. The slide is 2 7/8 inches long and of an inch wide. It is in excellent condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs.
