Email with any questions.....thank you. ========================================================================= Warren Long (1933-2016) Warren Long (1953-2016) was an American artist born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Initially pursuing a biology degree at San Francisco State University with plans for a medical career, Long's path shifted after spending time with his hospitalized brother. Finding himself unsuited to the medical field's precision, he explored other avenues, including working as a chef in Marin County before relocating to Southern California, drawn to the area's weather, ocean, and atmosphere. Long's artistic journey began with designing sculpted furniture for Tops Gallery in Malibu. He soon discovered his true calling as a muralist and painter, developing a unique style that drew from diverse influences like American Outsider art, folk art, Latin Renaissance, and Impressionism. His scientific background in ecological systematic biology also informed his work, as he incorporated historical context with biological elements, personal fantasies, and a distinct Southern California beach-life ethic. Long's connection to the ocean was particularly profound; a passionate surfer, he felt a strong sense of becoming one with nature while immersed in the sea. Long's artwork is characterized by bold, sunlit colors and a rich, three-dimensional texture, often utilizing assemblage techniques with found objects like animal skeletal fragments. His paintings ranged from landscapes and seascapes to whimsical portraits featuring subjects like pigs and mermaids. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Hamilton Galleries in Santa Monica with Hamilton, a gallery that remained in operation after his passing. Long's work garnered recognition, with notable collectors including celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Mel Gibson. He could often be found painting at his beach studio in Malibu, surrounded by art materials and interesting objects that would find their way into his innovative creations. Warren Long passed away in 2016 after a heart attack at Los Angeles International Airport. He is survived by his daughter, Tallulah, and his mother, Jane Russell. Though his life was cut short, Long left behind a vibrant artistic legacy, remembered for his distinctive style, his love for the ocean, and his ability to infuse his art with both humor and depth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email or Text any Questions.....thank you.
